'.bin' can be decoded by any Mac version of StuffIt Expander, and probably other programs as well. System 7.0.1 is available from Apple in '.smi.bin' format. So Stuffit Expander is still useful in some cases.

I have been using Sheepshaver for a long time, and just by following that simple rule, I have had no problems with it whatsoever. Second, and even more importantly, failure to do this seems sometimes lead to filesystem corruption on my real Mac, and the same thing might occur on your PC. First, it often seems necessary for Sheepshaver to properly interpret the files identity (type, creator, etc.). I have found this to be important for 2 reasons. Always use Sheepshaver to copy the app or file to a local drive using Finder within Sheepshaver first. I was running Sheepshaver on a Mac running OS X, so I'm not sure if this applies in quite the same way to running it in Windows.Įither way, its worthwhile to be aware that you should never be running apps or using files within Sheepshaver while they reside on the Sheepshaver share drive.
IIRC, all I had to do was copy them from the shared "UNIX" drive in Sheepshaver to a local Sheepshaver drive before attempting to unstuff, run, or use any type of file. When I began using Sheepshaver, I had lots of trouble with apps appearing as plain document files. One last point may be worth mentioning, although it may not apply to your situation.

I´ll update the OP somewhat to reflect this.
I´m farily certain that they all came with Stuffit Expander. I´m sure I´ll find a Mac OS 8 or 8.5 or 9 CD at my parents, plus they I believe lots of old MacFormat CDs in a dresser in their loft. Unfortunately as per Jables' post and my experiences using BetterZip, it seems clear now that I won´t be able to get neither an "externally un-binhexed" game installer, nor any version of Stuffit Expander sitting in a plain folder, if I´ll have to copy it from my PC, into the emulated Mac intact.īut no worries. Fortunately I believe I have access to old CDs from which I´ll finally be able to get a working version of Stuffit Expander into the emuator. I have tried to extract the installer from the archive with the Windows version of Stuffit Expander, but when I bring the file into the emulated Mac, the system thinks it is only a document, and not an application.ĮDIT: While I have now several old versions of Stuffit Expander sitting on my PC, and also have access to tools for unextracting game installer archives outside of the Mac environment, it seems clear that these unarchived files won´t survive being copyied into the emulated Mac.įiles need to be "binhexed" to survive the PC-Mac transfer, but without a working version of the expander already present in the Mac, I´m screwed.
